Byrd now knew that he woul d be able t o r each t he Sout h Pole whi ch was 300 m il es away, f or t her e wer e no mor e m ount ains i n si ght . We wer e ver y m uch sur pr ised when t he snake charm er suddenl y began t o play j az t unes and m oder n pop songs. The m ost unusual car was a Benz which had only t hree wheels. Bui lt i n 1885, i t was the ol dest car t aki ng par t. Af ter a gr eat m any l oud explosi ons, t he race began. Many of the cars br oke down on the course and som e dri ver s spent m or e t im e under t hei r car s than i n them ! A f ew cars, however, pl et ed t he r ace. The wi nni ng car r eached a speed of f or ty m il es an hourm uch faster t han any of it s ri val s. I t sped downhil l at t he end of t he race and it s dri ver had a l ot of t roubl e t r yi ng to st op i t. The r ace gave ever yone a great deal of pl easure.
