With the development of the multimedia technology, using puters to assist language teaching and learning bees a monplace in many schools. As primary school English teachers, the reasons why we should be interested in foreign language puter assisted instruction (CAI) and using Computerassisted Language Learning (CALL) include: (a) Experiential Learning, (b) Motivation, (c) Individualization, (d) Greater interaction. Finally, I will talk about some problems in the current CAI and give some suggestions. Key Words: CAI, CALL, Multimedia1. Introduction Computers have been used for language teaching ever since the 1960’s. In the last few years, the number of teachers using Computerassisted Language Learning (CALL) has increased markedly and the puter has taken the most important role of technology in education in the 21st century. As for our rural primary school English teachers, using the puters and the Internet resources can make our teaching and the students’ learning much easier than the traditional teaching and learning style.2. The Necessity of Using Computer to Assist English Teaching Computers have developed rapidly over the last quarter of 20th century, and particularly over the past ten years. They have bee more powerful (that is, able to process and store much more data), faster, cheaper, smaller, easier to use, and more convenient. Personal puters are within the reach of even ordinary people. At present, at least two teachers can share a puter at school in Beijing rural area and most of the teachers have their own puters at home and what is more every school has their students’ puter rooms. In recent years, equipment such as hard disks, CDROMs, laser disks, and printers used with puters has also developed rapidly. Using these, a puter program can handle sounds, pictures and video along with characters, so how to make good use of puter to assist our English class teaching and improve the students’ abilities to gather information and process information has bee an important issue that all the teachers care about. And last year nearly 90% of the teachers in Beijing have attended the internet teacher training which aims to teach them how to design, make and polish their teaching courseware.The reasons for using Computerassisted English teaching include: Experiential Learning The New English Teaching Standard clearly states that one of the characters of English teaching is to make students learn and engage in English from different ways as much as possible and have them experience and use the language by themselves. In order to give the children more chance to use their English, being a primary school English teacher, we have to design some interesting course wares suit the students’ appeal and we should also select and remend some good websites for them that fit the children’ levels and interest. The World Wide Web makes it possible for students to tackle a huge amount of human experience. Although students can still use their books, they are given the chance to escape from canned knowledge and discover thousands of information sources. In such a way, they can learn by doing things themselves .What is more, most of the language used on the Internet is in English and it is the language we used in our daily life. As we all know, when we learn a foreign language, we can master the target language only if we grasp the newest and truest words of it. Making use of networks can appropriately give students enough opportunities to practice English. MotivationAs the famous saying goes, interest is the best teacher. Computer is good for motivating students to study English because it enables the teacher to prepare an interesting class easier, faster and more convenient than before by using the innumerable resources from the internet. Although the initial appeal of multimedia is almost certainly due to its novelty, teachers and learners soon discover other aspects which are more educationally significant. A rich media environment allows contextualization of the target language in simulations which learners recognize as having practical reallife applications. The variety of activities, coupled with the rapid feedback that multimedia provides, also help maintain learner interest and attention. Children are anxious to operate puters because they are associated with fun and games or because they are considered to be fashionable. Many students are tired of traditional English classes and are interested in a new style of learning. When they watch the funny teaching course wares and interact with it, they feel that they can master English. They can study English with their own learning styles, and they can see the results of their learning. Students think materials are new and fresh if they are presented on puters. They seem to be willing to spend more hours and do more exercises on a puter than by hand (Kital, 1993c). Individualization One problem in English teaching is that students have a variety of interests and levels of English proficiency. Their learning speeds and learning styles also vary. CAI can help teachers to help individual students meet their own needs at their own pace. Shy or inhibited students can greatly benefit from individualized, studentcentered learning. I believe that this is one of the most important reasons to use CAI. In our daily teaching most teachers prefer to care the top students and those noisy students and at the same time neglect the ordinary and shy students. As a result those students will
