Af ter a t ime, we noticed a snake charmer with t wo large baskets at he other side of t he square, so we went to have alook at hi m. As oon as he saw us, he picked up a long pipe which was cover ed wi th coi ns and opened one of t he basket s. When he began to play a tune, we had our fi rst gli mpse of t he snake. It r ose out of t he basket and began to foll ow the movements of the pi pe. We wer e very much surpri sed when t he snake char mer suddenly began to play jaz t unes and modern pop songs. The snake, however, continued t o 39。dance39。 slowly. It obviously coul d not tel the di f er ence between I ndian musi c and jaz! Leson43 Over t he South Pole 飛越南極 In 1929, three year s af ter hi s f li ght over t he Nort h Pol e, the Amer ican expl or er , R. E. Byr d, succesfull y fl ew over the Sout h Pole f or the f irst time. Byr d now knew that he would be abl e t o reach the South Pole which was 300 miles away, f or there were no mor e mountains in sight . The ai rcraft was able to f ly over the endles white plains without dif ficulty.
