Liu Zongyuan was a famous activist on the historical stage during the middle period of the Tang Dynasty. To save the Tang Empire in danger after An Lushan－ Shi Siming Rebellion, the young Liu Zongyuan became an official. Before long, he came to be a major figure in a political renovation(革新 ). But it was forced to failure because it had offended(冒犯 ) the interests of many rulers. After the failure Liu Zongyuan was reduced to a local army mander in Yongzhou. Yongzhou is now located in the southern part of Hunan Province. It was a lonely place in the Tang Dynasty. The event became a turning point in Liu39。s life. He couldn39。t realize his aspiration(渴望 ) to save the country so he turned to do his best in literature and gained success. Liu Zongyuan finally became one of the eight famous writers of the Tang and Song Dynasties with his outstanding achievement in writing proses（散文） . Yongzhou had a charming and scenic landscape where Liu Zongyuan could convey his feelings to life. He pleted his book Eight Records of Excursions in the Yongzhou Prefecture（《 永州八記 》） . Cutting down some bamboos to open a road, I saw a pond with clear water. At its bottom is a whole piece of rock. The rock rises by the bank as if it39。s a highland, an islet, a mountain peak or a standing rock. Trees grow all around. Wistarias twine round the trees and swing in the wind. (小石潭記 ) Liu39。s descriptions of the landscape reflected his own feelings. Sitting by the pond, I39。m surrounded by trees and bamboos. Nobody es into the field of my vision. He had written many fables that enjoyed great popularity. One of them was Three Cautionary Tales（ 《 三戒》 ） . Qian Lu Ji Qiong, a Chinese idiom, continues to be used now. It describes someone who is at the end of his intelligence. Discourse of the Snake－ Catcher(《捕蛇者說》 ) is a widely known fable by Liu Zongyuan. Through a discourse, the writer and the leading character in the fable pared the poison of a snake with that of taxes. Liu absorbed the cream from his predecessors39。(前輩 ) works and wrote his own with simple wordings. He was an outstanding prose writer in ancient times. After serving as an official in Yongzhou for ten years, Liu Zongyuan was sent to be a regional chief in Liuzhou where he made every endeavor to develop production and education, clear away local bad customs and habits, and set servants free. He enjoyed love of the local people. Liu Zongyuan died at the age of 47 after he spent 3 years in Liuzhou. He had been strong in a manner of arrogance(傲骨 ) though he was sad all his life.
