John McQuaker has the story. John McQuaker] This afternoon at 2:45 in St. John’s harbour, Terry Fox dipped his foot into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The beginning of a cross country run. Many people have run or walked across Canada, but Fox hopes to be the first to do it with an artificial leg. He lost his right leg to cancer three years ago and decided he wasn’t going to allow the loss to affect his outlook on life. To demonstrate that cancer can be beaten and to give hope to others, as well as raise money for the Cancer Society, he’s convinced he can make it on one good and one artificial leg from here to Vancouver Island.[Terry Fox] Whatever you do you’ve got to do the....the best you can possibly do and I’m going to...I’m going to give it everything I… I possibly can. It’s just going to be… if I don’t make it… it’s going to be something that ahh… nobody would make it.[John McQuaker] After making his way from the harbour to city hall, Fox, wearing the Mayor’s cloak of office raised the flag of the Cancer Society. And after being given greetings from the Mayor for the people of British Columbia, he finally got on his way out of the has got a supply of 8 pairs of running shoes and three extra legs as well as spare parts and a van. A friend from Port Coquitlam, his home town, is driving all the way with him. At 30 miles a day, roughly, they hope to hit the west coast by next fall in 5 or 6 months.
