They neded four negati ves, as several col ors were goi ng to be used on the story. Each of the m ai n col ors had one negati ve sheet and when they were bi ned they m ade a col ored page for the newspaper. After one l ast check the page was ready to be pri nted. A real scoop!” Unit 5 FIRST AID FOR BURNS The ski n i s an essenti al part of your body and its l argest an. You have three layers of ski n whi ch act as a barri er agai nst di sease, poisons and the sun?s harm ful rays. The functi ons of your ski n are al so very plex: i t keeps you warm or cool 。 it prevents your body from l osi ng too m uch water。 i t is where you feel col d, heat or pai n and i t gi ves you your sense of touch. So as you can im agi ne, i f your ski n gets burned it can be very seri ous. Fi rst ai d i s a very i mportant fi rst step in the treatm ent of burns. Causes of burns You can get burned by a vari ety of thi ngs: hot li qui ds, steam, fi re, radi ati on (by bei ng cl ose to hi gh heat or fi re, etc), the sun, el ectri ci ty or chem ical s. Types of burns There are three types of burns. Burns are cal ed fi rst, second, or thi rd degree burns, dependi ng on whi ch l ayers of the ski n are burned. First degree burns These affect only the top layer of the ski n. These burns are not seri ous and shoul d feel better withi n a day or two. Exam pl es i ncl ude mil d sunburn and burns caused by touchi ng a hot pan, stove or i ron for a m om ent. Second degree burns These afect both the top and the second l ayer of the ski n. These burns are serious and take a few weeks to heal. Exam pl es i ncl ude severe sunburn and burns caused by hot l i qui ds. Thi rd degree burns These affect al l three l ayers of the ski n and any ti sue and ans under the ski n. Exampl es incl ude burns caused by el ectri c shocks, burning cl othes, or severe petrol fi res. These burns cause very severe i njuries and the vi cti m must go to hospi tal at once. Fi rst ai d treatm ent Remove cl othi ng usi ng scissors i f necessary unl ess i t is stuck to the burn. Take off other cl othing and jewel ry near the burn. Cool burns imm edi atel y wi th cool but not i cy water. It i s best to place burns under gentl y runni ng water for about 10 mi nutes. (The cool water stops the burni ng process, prevents the pai n bei ng unbearabl e and reduces swel li ng. ) Do not put col d water on thi rd degree burns. For fi rst degree burns, pl ace cool , clean, wet cl oths on them unti l the pai n i s not so bad. For second degree burns, keep cl oths cool by putti ng them back i n a basi n of col d water, squeezi ng them out and placi ng them on the burned area over and over agai n for about an hour until the pai n is not so bad. Dry the burned area gentl y. Do not rub, as thi s may break any bl isters and the wound m ay get infected. Cover the burned area wi th a dry, cl ean bandage that wil l not sti ck to the ski n. H ol d the bandage i n pl ace wi th tape. N ever put buter, oi l or oi ntm ent on burns as they kep the heat i n the wounds and m ay cause i nfecti on. If burns are on arms or legs, keep them hi gher than the heart, i f posi ble. If burns are on the face, the victi m should sit up. If the i njuri es are second or third degree burns, it i s vital to get the vi cti m to the doctor or hospi tal at once.
