【正文】 The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colorful paintings of Tahitians and their culture. The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century. They39。re never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something bees conventional, it39。s turned down. The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism (印象派). Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen. Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from respectable art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too. Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society. He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti. Artists like Gauguin used the word primitive for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in being modem, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world. In truth, Gauguin39。s paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not primitive. They are the work of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after, in the 20th century. When we look closely at the works of Gauguin we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.(1)What can we infer about Gauguin39。s life? Over the last three and a half years, the antilittering woman has spent most of her free time picking up cigarette butts (煙頭) from the streets of her home city. Called the Butt Lady by her local munity, Dawly began her mission to rid the streets of her city of cigarette butts in October, 2014. The woman looked for cigarette butts, picked them up and threw them in the trash. To keep a count of how many butts she picks up, the Butt Lady has been using a tablet, and earlier this month, she hit a historic milestone—one million cigarette butts. I got tired of going on my walks and seeing cigarette butts everywhere, Sally Dawly said. I39。m just shocked that I had to pick up so many. I39。ve ever picked up 3,000 butts in one day, she said. Don39。t throw away your butts。 better yet, stop smoking. With so many cigarette butts littering the streets, can one person39。s efforts really make a difference? Surprisingly, the answer seems to be yes. Soon after the Butt Lady of Auburn started her mission and word of her efforts spread, cigarette cans started appearing around bars and restaurants in the city. Members of the local munity even came out to cheer her on as she approached her onemillionbutt milestone. Sally knows her city39。s cigarette butt littering problem won39。t be solved anytime soon, but she hopes her work will inspire people to at least think twice before dropping cigarette butts in the streets. She has decided to continue cleaning up after irresponsible smokers, and already has a new milestone in her sights—two million cigarette butts. Word of the Butt Lady39。s efforts to keep the streets cigarette buttfree has reached neighboring munities as well, and CBS Sacramento reports that other cities have started seeking her he
