Later a neighbour t ol d me about him. Everybody knows hi m. His name is Percy But t ons. He cal s at every house in the st reet once a mont h and al ways asks for a meal and a glass of beer. Lesson 7 Too l at e 為時(shí)太晚 The plane was l at e and det ecti ves wer e wai ting at he air port al mor ning. They were expecti ng a valuable par cel of diamond f rom Sout h Afri ca. A few hour s earl ier, someone had told t he poli ce that hi eves would t ry to steal the diamonds. To their surpr ise, the pr ecious parcel was f ull of stones and sand! Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最好的和最差的 Joe Sanders has t he most beautif ul garden i n our town. Near ly everybody ent er s f or 39。The Nicest Gar den Competi tion39。 each year, but Joe wins every t ime. Bi l Fr it h39。s garden i s larger than Joe39。s. Bil works harder than Joe and gr ows more f lower s and veget ables, but Joe39。s gar den is more i nt er esting. He has made neat pat hs and has buil t a wooden bridge over a pool . I li ke gardens too, but I do not like har d wor k. Ever y year I ent er f or the gar den pet it ion too, and I always win a l it le pri ze f or the worst garden i n the town! Lesson 9 A cold wele 冷遇 On Wednesday evening, we went to the Town Hal . I t was the last day of the year and a large cr owd of peopl e had gat hered under t he Town Hal l clock. It woul d st rike twelve in t wenty mi nutes39。 ti me. Fif teen mi nutes pased and then, at f ive t o twelve, the clock stopped. The bi g minut e hand di d not move. We wait ed and wait ed, but not hi ng happened. Suddenly someone shouted, 39。I t39。s t wo minut es past twelve! The clock has st opped!39。 I looked at my watch. It was true. The bi g cl ock refused t o wele the New Year. At hat moment ever ybody began to l augh and si ng. Leson 10 Not for jazz 不適于演奏爵士樂 We have an old musical instrument . I t i s cal ed a clavi chord(翼琴 ). It was made in Germany i n 1681. Our cl avichor d is kept i n the livi ngr oom. It has bel ong to our f amily f or a long ti me. The i nstr ument was bought by my gr andfather many year s ago. Recent ly i t was damaged by a visit or . She tr ied to play jaz on it! She str uck t he keys too har d and two of the st rings wer e br oken. My f ather was shocked. Now we ar e not al lowed t o touch it . I t is being r epai red by a f ri end of my f at her39。s. Lesson 11 One good t urn deserves anot her 禮尚往來 I was havi ng dinner at a r estaur ant when Hary St ele came i n. Har ry worked in a lawyer 39。s of fi ce years ago, but he is now working at a bank. He gets a good salary, but he always borr ows money f rom his fr iends and never pays i t back. Har ry saw me and came and sat at t he same t able. He has never bor rowed money f rom me. Whi le he was eat ing, I asked him t o lend me amp。2. We shal met hi m at he harbour earl y in the morning. He wi l l be in his smal l boat , Topsail. Tapsail is a f amous l it tle boat . I t has ailed acr oss the At lant ic many t imes. Capt ain Al ison wi l set out at eight o39。cl ock so we shal l have plent y of t ime. We shal l se his boat and t hen we shal l say good bye to him. He wil l be away f or two months. We are ver y proud of hi m. He wi l take part in an impor tant r ace across t he At lant ic. Leson 13 The Greenwood Boys 綠林少年 The Greenwood Boys ar e a gr oup of popular si ngers. At present , t hey are visit ng al par ts of t he countr y. They wi l be ar iving here t omor row. They wi l be ing by t rain and most of the young people i n the town wil be meti ng t hem at the stati on. Tomorr ow eveni ng t hey wil l be singi ng at the Wor ker s39。 Club. The Gr enwood Boys wil l be stayi ng f or f ive days. Dur ing this ti me, they wil give five per formances. As usual , t he police wil l have a dif ficult time. They wil be tr yi ng t o kee p or der. Af ter I had left a smal vi l age in t he south of Fr ance, I dr ove on to the next town. On the way, ayoung man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for ali ft. As soon as he had got into t he car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in t he same l anguage. Apart f rom a few words, I do not know any Fr ench at al l.
