When two or more than two consonants e immediately one after another (without any vowels inserted them) they are called consonant clusters. ? desks /desks/ spring /spr??/, ? throw /?r??/ fly /fla?/ ? In Chinese there is no such phenomenon and the Chinese students often find it hard to pronounce consonant clusters correctly. As a result it may be helpful for the Chinese learners of English to remember two things when they are trying them. A. Do not insert any vowel between the consonants. For instance, ? blue /blu?/ */b?lu?/。 ? lamp /l?mp/ */l?m?p/. B. The first consonant must be said softly and quickly, the second is very often formed while the first one is being pronounced. As in /kw/, the vocal ans are almost ready for /w/ except before one starts for /k/. So the effect is a sound of mingled /k/ and /w/. ? There are three kinds of consonant clusters: initial (struggle), medial (deskmate), and final clusters (twelfth), etc. (1) Initial clusters: ? spill stuff score smog snag ? slim sprain split square sphere (2) Medial clusters: ? succeed expression abroad ? extreme exhaust reflect ? Antarctic pletely (3) Final clusters: ? grasp chest cast text ? dusk film select soft ? belt width length twelve
