The software can be used for manual setting of distance protection in a conventional system or as an intelligent tool for an automatic setting in a modern coordinated control and protection system. A microprocessorbased distance relay with this new adaptive technique can respond to system conditions that change from time to time and the puter simulation has shown the validity of the new technique. The additional input data required by the adaptive algorithm can be obtained through low speed munication systems such as SCADA, RTU or substation host puters. The reach of distance protection is evaluated for userdefined high resistance faults and the line maximum shortterm load forecasting. As a result a list of new settings for distance relays is printed out which can be reported to different substations. Although in conventional systems this can be done on a daily or other period of time basis, in a modern system this program can be run automatically and set the relays (5 refs.) System has also been developed to interface the HV/EHV power system with the PC. Development of the measurement process and also the relay has been simulated with software Simulink (Matlab?). For interfacing at the input, a set of hardware has been used. The output signal is generated from the analog output block of the relay unit and finally sent to the LPT1 port of the PC. The generated output signal, which sends the trip signal to the parallel port, is interfaced to the physical system. Through digital to analog converter (DAC 0804) the signal turns to an analogue signal. This signal further amplified and is used for monitoring, control and protection of the equipment depending on different frequency range and the logical condition framed in elements of the relay unit (7 refs.)
