INTRODUCTION With the development of Reform and Open policy and economic globalization, China has been increasingly frequently municating with western countries, especially with the United States that is to reach a new stage. Because of the difference in social and cultural background, the understanding of friendship in western country is quite different from that in China. It’s no denying that we should find out the differences between western countries’ friendship and Chinese friendship, and be aware of this difference and be tolerant of culture difference. This course paper will demonstrate the difference from three aspects: the importance of friendship, the way to establish and maintain friendship, responsibility friends should take (Liu, 20xx). The study will be carried out through questionnaire method. 2. LITERATURE REVIEW There is general consensus as to what the differences in friendship concept between China and western countries are. The difference in friendship concept can be shown from the three aspects: definition, establish friendship and maintain friendship, responsibility that friends should take (Wu, 20xx). In Chinese culture, friendship means the deep feeling and close relationship between friends. According to English dictionary, friend is a person you know well and like, and who is not usually a member of your family. Friendship can change over time and space. Secondly it’s widely acknowledged that people in western countries tend to make new friends and establish friendship in a short time. Chinese’s inner defense will decrease with the increase of contact, so Chinesekeep a wary eye on strangers and trust with the increase of contact people’s inner defense will increase in western countries, because westerners pay great attention to individual privacy, they don’t want to share privacy with friends (Zhang, 20xx). Thirdly, Friends’ responsibility is different. Chinese have high expectations to friends pared with people in western countries (Park, 20xx). The reason which causes the difference is the different history reason. China was an agricultural society for thousands of years. The agricultural required the labor to have concentration of cooperation, so the interpersonal relationship was quite important. Western culture was based on mercial munity. They value individualism and advocate personal freedom (Schuler, 20xx). Based on the literature research, a survey will be carried out through questionnaire to examine the ideas.
