on would not only be more standardized but also make a deep impression for the audience.Usually, movie titles are brief and short. Translating such brief movie title is just regarded as a piece of cake, but it is hard to translate well. Translation of being elegant in style and rich in sentiment could not only attract the audience but also be meaningful and thoughtprovoking as an art. Therefore, when translating the movie title, firstly we should get the central meaning and style of the movie, and then we must learn the principles, grasp the skills and fathom the wordings. However, academic atmosphere is very desolate and arguments are always uniform in the movie title translation research. Numerous academic articles just deal with movie titles translation in specific skills, such as literal translation, free translation and transliteration. However, they neglect the effects of culture and its versatility in movie title translation. Moreover, there is also a lack in the exploration in the translation process and evaluation. Thus, this paper probes into the movie title translation, and puts forward further new skills based on the basic translation theories, with the final purpose of bringing standardization and pluralism into the translation of movie titles. Key words: movie title translation principles skills摘 要 片名是電影的一個不可缺少的組成部分。雖說如此簡短的翻譯雖屬雕蟲小技,但是要譯好卻實(shí)屬不易。鴛鴦被里成雙對,一樹梨花壓海棠?!?Nowadays, 碧血 means that blood for a just cause. Such a translation can hunt the imagination of audience. Elizabeth is a movie about a queen. If it is just translated into 伊麗莎白, the audience would be confused about who Elizabeth is, a woman or the English queen. However, the information would be more clear if two characters 女王are added after伊麗莎白. Then the audience will understand that it is a movie about Elizabeth queen not a woman called Elizabeth. More example, if the Disney movie Shrek is translated into 史萊克, Chinese audience will be confused about it. They cannot get any information just from this title. What is Shrek, a human or an object? But if the translator just adds two words 怪物before 史萊克,making the title more vivid and understandable. Sometimes, adding some words before or after the Chinese titles could plete the information of the original titles. Literal translation Literal translation means “follows the original words exactly”. (Oxford advanced learner’s EnglishChinese dictionary, 6th edition, 2004:1022) If the title can be translated literally, we always use literal translation. For examples, True Lies 真實(shí)謊言 Roman Holiday 羅馬假日 Modern Times 摩登時代 A Farewell to arm 向武器告別 All Quiet on the Western Front 西線無戰(zhàn)事 Macbeth 麥克白 Judgment at Nuremberg 紐倫堡審判 Schindler’s List 辛德勒的名單 Basic Instinct 本能 The Graduate 畢業(yè)生 However, some titles should change word order of the original title, . The Sound of Music (音樂之聲). A list of Hollywood movies of 2001 accounted by South city paper shows that 20% of the movie titles were translated with the skill of literal translation. For example, Angel Eyes 天使眼 Pearl Harbor 珍珠港 America’s Sweetheart 美國甜心 Original Sin 原罪 Training Day 訓(xùn)練日 Monsters Inc. 怪物公司 Spy Game 間諜公司 Free translation“Free translation reproduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original.”(Newmark, 2001:46) Some American movie titles contain their specific culture。 finally, it reads more smoothly and pleased. The fourword phrases are divided into two parts, one is fourword idioms and the other is ordinary fourword phrases. Translators would utilize this advantage of Chinese language in movie title translation at times. Let’s look at the following example. The novel Gone with the Wind was first translated into Chinese by Fu Donghua. Fu’s Chinese version entitled《飄》was first published by Longmen Bookstore in 1940 and then by Zhejiang People’s Press in 1979. Then it was translated into 《亂世佳人》. Though there have been two versions of the book title, the translations of the movie’s title in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the same, which is《亂世佳人》unanimously. Li Yuying and Ye Xuehua(李玉英,2004) claimed that《亂世佳人》is better. According to them,《飄》indicates“隨風(fēng)而去”(to drift away with the wind) which is exact, vivid and concise, fully conveying the information the original title carries. They continued to argue that the version《亂世佳人》is much better than《飄》for the reason that亂世refers to the American Civil War between 1861 and 1865, and佳人to the female protagonist Scarlett O’hara. A clear look at the title lead views to think that the translation is done through a domesticating method and of a strong Chinese flavor because Chinese people tend to use more vivid, concrete and figurative expressions such as“亂世出英雄”,“亂世梟雄”,“才子佳人”and so on.
