Henry’s Writing StyleZhu Fenfen Abstract: American short story writer, O. Henry, his The Last Leaf describes the sharing weal and woe of love story between three poor artists, who met by chance at the bottom of American society, and shaping a moving image about an old artist, called Behrman, who has a spirit of selfsacrifice to help people and gives hopes to others. The novel uses the method of “tearful smile” to soothe the trauma of small potatoes who lived in the frustrated life, meanwhile, using O. Henry’s own unique ending style, to shock the readers’ mind. This paper also analyzes his unique writing style.Key words: The Last Leaf, “tearful smile”, O. Henrystyle ending, writing style《最后一片葉子》——淺評歐 and also because his description of a large number of people were all rich in life, his works were known as the “the Humorous Encyclopedia of the American Life”. His best short stories, such as A Service of Love, The Cop and the Anthem, The Furnished Room, The Gift of the Magi, The Last Leaf and so on, all could be included in the world’s best short stories. Among them, the works which described the people’s living in Manhattan of New York was the most famous. The streets, the small restaurants, and the atmosphere of the old apartments was rendered by him very realistic, and therefore, he is known as “the Laureate Poet of Manhattan”. The Last Leaf is the typical masterpiece about it.2. The process of The Last Leaf The story of The Last Leaf is very short. In the story, the two likeminded girl got together for their artistic dream. They support to each other, and help to each other. “At the top of a squatty, threestory brick Sue and Johnsy had their studio.” But in a cold winter, one of the two girls, Johnsy, was attacked by a devil, whom the doctors called “pneuonia”.
