It is who you are rather than what you look like that counts. D. It is worthwhile to experience something interesting and creative.C To most of us, medicine es from a drugstore. But originally, much of the medicine developed in the last century came from natural sources: plants or bacteria. Now, a group of scientists in Great Britain are hoping to develop a medicine from poisonous insects. They are researching whether the deadly venom(毒液)of some insects can work against bacteria.Venom tech laboratoryAbout 400 insects live in plastic containers in the Venomtech laboratory. Each container has an image of a skull and crossbones. The images warn that a bite from the insects inside can be anything from painful to deadly. The venom from these insects contains hundreds of chemical ponents. Each ponent has a different target and effect. Medical researchers separate the venom into its ponent parts. Then they create a library of those ponents, looking for the ones that could be turned into new drugs. “Some of them we found can kill bacteria, like E Coli, so they’re very relevant at the moment where modern medicines are failing. And we’re also finding venom that is changing and killing cancer cells.”Finding new ways to kill bacteria is important to researchers. One reason is that people have used antibiotics (抗生素)so much that some bacteria can now resist it. For example, tuberculosis used to be curable with antibiotics. Now it is not. How do they get the venom out? To get as much venom as possible, researchers feed the insects well and then put them to sleep temporarily. Steven Trim of Venomtech says researchers anaesthetize the insects to make removing the venom safer. After all, an immobile insect cannot bite. Researchers then electrically stimulate the insect to contract(收縮)the muscle and squeeze the gland(腺). The pressure produces a small amount of venom. Researchers separate the venom into hundreds of proteins. Each protein contains between one and five different molecules (分子). Someday, those tiny molecules might be turned into powerful new drugs.27. The skull and crossbones images in plastic containers are used to____________. Then grab your hiking boots and a tent. A new study suggests that a couple days of camping in the great outdoors can reset your circadian ( 晝夜節(jié)律的)clock and help you get more sleep. The circadian clock, more monly known as the body clock, is an internal system that tells our bodies when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin(褪黑激素)circulating in a person’s blood at any given time. In a healthy sleeper, melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night, and then settle back down when it’s time to wake up.In our modern society, however, most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in many hours after sunrise if we could. And the trouble is that your melatonin levels may still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to grogginess(頭暈眼花). It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes(糖尿病), overweight problems and heart diseaseProfessor Kenneth P. Wright of the University of Colora
