t China should do to help protect animals more. I know that there are nearly 2,000 nature reserves in China, which is good. I live in Beijing and there are about 30 reserves outside the city. We visited one of them last month to see for ourselves. I feel so sorry for the giant panda. It‘s one of the most popular animals in the world and a real symbol of China. We learned that pandas mainly live on bamboo, and that a panda can eat half its body weight of bamboo in 24 hours! That‘s a lot of bamboo. I think we should try to do more to stop cutting down their forests. Pandas are already a rare animal and it would be so sad if they became extinct forever. The other animal we should try to protect more is the Chinese alligator. These creatures live in some parts of eastern China. These beautiful animals live in freshwater rivers and lakes but the water in some places isn‘t clean enough for them to live in. It‘s really dirty in fact. The government should stop factories polluting the lakes and rivers. If we protect these beautiful animals in China, more people may wish to visit China to see them. They could be an important tourist attraction. It would be good if more people came to visit our beautiful country, especially to see the quieter areas in the country. Now mos。t want to use them because they are not fashionable? Try to think positively about the walk! 13. THE TITANIC When the ship the Titanic was designed for the White Star Shipping Company, everyone was very excited. It was going to be the biggest, the heaviest, most luxurious passenger ship ever! Even its name makes you think of great size and strength. ?Titanic‘ means very, very strong and powerful. On 10 April 1912, the Titanic set off on its first voyage across the Atlantic to America. As the Titanic sailed west, warnings of icebergs were sent to the ship, but didn‘t reach the bridge. So the Titanic was travelling at almost top speed when it hit an iceberg. It sank two hours and forty minutes later. There were 2,223 people on board and 1,517died. On 6 May, 2020, the last survivor to have memories of the Titanic‘s sinking, Lillian Gertrud Asplund, died at her home in Massachusetts, United States. Asplund, who was just five years old at the time, lost her father and three brothers in the tragedy. One of the most famous stories of the Titanic is of the band. On 15 April, the Titanic‘s eightmember band, led by Wallace Hartley, had tried to keep passengers calm and upbeat. The band continued playing music even when it became clear that the ship was going to sink. None of the band members survived the sinking. Hartley‘s body was later found. Hartley was considered a hero, and his funeral in England was attended by thousands. The sinking of the Titanic has been the subject of many books, films and even songs. The 1997 movie Titanic brought the story back again and the song in the movie My Heart Will Go On is still very popular today. 14. HERE COMES THE TRAIN Here es the train. Here es the train. Mary Dear Mary, I think you want me to feel sorry for you! But I don39。t want to breathe it in. Do you have smog in Oxford? Eric 6. BEN IN OXFORD Hi Eric, We don‘t have smog in Oxford. We get fog sometimes, but that‘s all. Oxford is much smaller than LA. We only have about 135,000 people. I looked up the 1900 population, it was about 57,000. So it is about twice as many people, not ten times as many, like LA! Oxford is much smaller than London London has about 7,000,000 people. So that means that LA has more people than London. LA gets hotter than Oxford. We have colder winters too – it can be 4176。s what we call Los Angeles. So I will tell you about Los Angeles now. You can tell me about Oxford when you write back. LA is one of the biggest cities in California. There are about 10,000,000 people here. We learned in school last week that in 1900 there were only 100,000 people here. So it has grown fast. It is mostly sunny here. It gets very hot in the summerup to 28176。t know much about Oxford, except that it has a famous university. We39。s on? Teahouse 悅讀聯(lián)播初二上模塊 10 P74 15.
