Coal has already been causing severe pollution and huge carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in China The exploration and utilization of coal have already been causing severe pollution and ecological degradation. In all,70–80% or more sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), mercury (Hg), particulates and CO2 are caused by direct bustion of coal. Currently, about 30–40% of China’s territory, especially the southwest, is suffering from acid rain and respiratory system diseases are continuously increasing. Particularly, it is quite dif?cult to solve the problem of CO2 reduction with direct bustion of coal because of the huge volumetric ?ow rate of the ?ue gas and low concentration of CO2 5 (about 13%). CO2 capture is a highenergyconsumption process, and it will lower the ef?ciency of the power plants by about 9–13% percentage points. China is now the second largest emitter of CO2 after the United States. A report last November released by the IEA showed that China would surpass the United States and bee the world’s top CO2 emitter by 2020.
