There are now so m any of them that a new park has been opened for them i n H ebei Provi nce. At the m om ent the Mil u deer l i ve i n centres where they are bei ng wel protected and care for . Thi s i s a god exam pl e of fri endshi p and understandi ng between these two countri es. Uni t 5 The band that wasn’t H ave you ever wanted to be part of a band as a fam ous si nger or musi ci ans? H ave you ever dream ed of pl ayi ng i n front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at whi ch everyone is cl appi ng and appreci ati ng your m usi c? Do you si ng Karaoke and pretend you are a famous si nger l i ke Song Zuyi ng or Liu H uan? To be honest, a l ot of peopl e atach great im portance to be i ng ri ch and fam ous. But just now do peopl e form a band? Many m usi ci ans m eet and form a band because they l ike to wri te and pl ay thei r own m usic. They may start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practi sing thei r musi c in som eone’s house i s the fi rst step to fam e. Som eti m es they m ay pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn som e extra m oney for them sel ves or to pay for thei r i nstrum ents. Later they may gi ve perform ances i n pubs or cl ubs, for whi ch they are pai d i n cash. O f course they hope to m ake records in a studi o and sel m il li ons of copi es to be e m il li onai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di ferent way. It was cal ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usi ci ans were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel as pl ay m usi c, m ost of whi ch was based l oosel y on the Beatles. The TV ani zer had pl anned to fi nd four m usi ci ans who coul d act as wel as si ng. They put an adverti sem ent i n a newspaper looki ng for rock m usi ci ans, but they coul d onl y fi nd one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not si ng wel enough, they had to rely on other m usi ci ans to hel p them. So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to si ng. Anyhow their perform ances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that their fans formed cl ubs in order to get ti me I l ook part i n the 78th O l ym pi c on a flyi ng isl and above Brusel s in the sky. I won the si ver m edal for my perform ance . Thi s year I had the honour to be chosen agai n . I wanted to mm et robots from other countyi es and expl ore i des about our sport. H ower , m y programm er fel l il l the week before we were goi ng to l eave . It was very pai nful for her and I fel t very fri ghtened. I no l onger fel t so confi dent that I woul d wi n. The day of the peti ti on was rather coul d for m y l egs and m y speci al oi l began to fteeze. I paused before I jum ped from the starting pl ace on a l i tl e spaceshi p but then I began m y perform ance. At the correct m om ent I tri ed to open my parachute but there was a probl em .It onl y opened a li ttle . In stead of fl yi ng softl y to earth I began to fal l faster and faster so that I coul d not turn , di ve, ci rcl e or dance. My heart stopped beati ng as I l anded heavil y on a m ountai n covered wi th snow. Thi s i s why I am wri ti ng to you from m y hospi tal bed wi th two broken l egs and a fragil e head. I di d not wi n anythi ng at the Ol ympi c after al l. I need the factory to build me two new legs and an even bigger head. Then I will be able to pete once more . Let’s hope foe greater succes in the next O l ym pi cs! Unit 4 (1) H ow Dai sy l earned to hel p wil dli fe Dai sy had al ways l onged to hel p endangered speci es of wi l dl ne day she woke up and found a fl yi ng carpet by her bed. “Where do you want to go?”it asked. Daiasy responded immediately. “I’d like to see some endangered wildlife,”she said. “please take me to a distant land where I can find the animal that gave fur to make this sweater. ”At once the carpet flew away and took her to Tibet. There Daisy saw an antelope looking sad. It said,“We are bei ng kil l ed for the wool beneath our stom ur fur i s bei ng used to m ake sweaters for peopl e li ke you . As a reasult, we are now an endangered species.”At that Daisy cried,“I’m sorry I didn’t know that. I wonder what is being done to help you. Flying carpet,please show me a place where there’s some wildlife protection. ” The fl yi ng carpet travel l ed so fast that next m i nute they were in Zimbabwe. Daisy turned around and found that she was being watched by an elephant.“H ave you e to take my photo?”it asked. In relief Daisy burst into laughter. “Don’t laugh,”said the elephant,“We used to be an endangered species. Farmers hunted us wi thout m ercy. They sai d we destroyed thei r farm s,and m oney from touri sts onl y went to the l arge tour pani es. So the government deci ded to help. They al owed touri sts to hunt onl y a certai n num ber of anim al s i f they pai d the farm ow the farm ers are happy and our numbers are increasing. So good things are being done here to save local wildlife. ” Daisy smiled.“That’s good news. It shows the importance of wildlife protection,but I’d like to help as the WWF suggests.”The carpet Rose against and alm ost at once they were i n a thi ck rai nforest.
