H ave you ever dream ed of pl ayi ng i n front of thousands of peopl e at a concert, at whi ch everyone is clappi ng and appreci ating your musi c? Do you sing Karaoke and pretend you are a fam ous singer l ike Song Zuyi ng or Li u H uan? To be honest, a lot of peopl e atach great im portance to bei ng ri ch and famous. But just now do people form a band? Many m usi ci ans m eet and form a band because they l ike to write and pl ay thei r own m usic. They m ay start as a group of hi ghschool students, for whom practising thei r m usic i n someone’s house i s the first st ep to fam e. Som etim es they m ay pl ay to passersby i n the street or subway so that they can earn som e extra m oney for them sel ves or to pay for thei r i nstrum ents. Later they m ay gi ve perform ances i n pubs or cl ubs, for which they are pai d i n cash. O f course they hope to m ake records i n a studi o and sel m il li ons of copies to be e m il ionai res! H owever, there was one band that started i n a di fferent way. It was cal l ed the Monkees and began as a TV show. The m usi ci ans were to pl ay jokes on each other as wel as pl ay m usic, m ost of whi ch was based l oosel y on the Beatl es. The TV anizer had pl anned to find four musi ci ans who coul d act as wel l as sing. They put an adverti sem ent i n a newspaper looki ng for rock musi ci ans, but they coul d only fi nd one who was good enough. They had to use actors for the other three m em bers of theband. As som e of these actors coul d not sing wel l enough, they had to rel y on other m usi ci ans to hel p them . So duri ng the broadcasts they just pretended to sing. Anyhow thei r performances were hum orous enough to be copi ed by other groups. They were so popul ar that their fans formed clubs in order to get more famil iar with them. Each week on TV, the Monkees would play and si ng songs written by other m usi ci ans. H owever, after a year or so i n whi ch they becam e m ore seri ous about thei r work, the Monkees started to pl ay and si ng their own songs l i ke a real band. Then they produced their own records and started touri ng and playi ng their own m usi c. In the USA they becam e even more popul ar than the Beatl es and sol d even m ore records. The band broke up about 1970, but hapil y they reuni ted i n the mi d1980s. They produced a new record i n 196, wi th whi ch they cel ebrated thei r form er tim e as a real band. Freddy the frog(Ⅱ) N ot l ong after Freddy and the band becam e famous, they visited Bri tain on a brief tour. Fans showed thei r devoti on by wai ti ng for hours to get ti ckets for their concerts . Freddy was now qui te confi dent when he went into a concert hal . H e enjoyed singi ng and al the congratulati ons afterwards! Hi s m ost exci ti ng i nvi tati on was to perform on a TV programm e cal ed “ Top of pops “. H e had to go to London, wear an expensi ve sui t and gi ve a perform ance to a TV camera. It felt very strange. But as soon as the programm e was over, the telephones whi ch were in the same room started ri ngi ng. Everybody was aski ng when they coul d see Freddy and his band agai n. They were trul y stars. Then thi ngs went wrong. Freddy and hi s band coul d not go out anywhere wi thout bei ng folowed. Even when they wore sunglases or beards people recognized them. Fans found them even when they went into toilet. They tri ed to hide i n the readi ng rooms of l ibraries, but it was useless. Someone was al ways there! Their personal life was regularl y di scussed by people who did not know them but talked as i f they close friends. At last feeli ng very upset and sensitive, Freddy and hi s band reali zed that they must l eave the country before it became too pai nful for them. So they l eft Bri tai n, to whi ch they were never humans cam e i nto bei ng and thei r future seemed secure at that tim e.
