In the novel the old man had no harvest in 84 days so he decided to continue further out to sea. Why wasn’t there fish on offshore? Because human overfishing had led this result. Ecological munity itself had suffered the unbalance of the ocean, but the old man continue out to sea obviously formed a strong environmental resistance and restricted the realization of ecological balance. Here we can see the old man and the sea depend on each other. Hemingway was trying to tell us that humans as a member of the nature live in a symbiosis with the nature that they are depending on, which ply with the law of maintaining the balance of the entire ecosystem and also is the longterm survival 7 and development of human society. All forms of life and humans enjoy equal right to life. Humans and the nature are independent. The old man who was alone struggling in a vast expanse of Blue Ocean was lonely and small and the ending was ultimately to the old man’s failure, which showed the inevitable tragedy of human conquest of the nature with a clever metaphor. So Hemingway at the end of the story set up the scene: “the fish skeleton now is just rubbish, only the tide to wash it away.”(82). The idea that emphasizes human power to conquer the nature is absurd and wrong. The old man and the nature in this novel were pletely interdependent, closely linked and had bee an indispensable part of the whole world. In the past people mented on Santiago that he was a tragic hero and regarded the shark’s attacks on humans as a test of the nature. Santiago had a glorious defeat at last, which told people to dare to face failure and accept the challenge bravely. Did Hemingway want to give Santiago a Q type victory? Obviously not, so let us listen to what Santiago had said. When his marlin that he had caught were eaten1/4 by the shark and were the best meat, he said “I shouldn’t have gone out so far, fish, neither for you nor for me, I am sorry, fish.” (Hemingway 116). When Marlin was eaten half by sharks, he said “Half fish. Fish that you were, I am sorry that I went too far out. I ruined us both.”(Hemingway 122). Man had gone too far and entered the field where it didn’t belong to humans and humans had offended the nature. So the punishment of the nature also can hardly be avoided. According to Hemingway, whenever humans are against the nature, all will end in human failure. On the surface of it, man can conquer the nature and show you great power, but he must suffer its punishment that nature brings. The deeper the human’s conquest of the nature is, the more destruction nature tends to give. Human’s plete conquest of the nature is also the time when nature destroys human.
