He has won two Hugo awards for two novels: The Dragon Masters and The Last Castle. These have long been associated with each other, not just because they have both won Hugo awards, but also because they share certain themes. Both stories are set in the future, and they feature humans enslaving (奴役 ) aliens. In each, the plot turns to a war between the humans and the aliens. In The Dragon Masters, after the war the humans that remain are mostly slaves of aliens — except on one pla where a few remain free. In fact, these free humans have captured (捕獲 ) some aliens and are keeping them as slaves. The hero, Joaz Banbeck, has predicted that many aliens will e to their pla some day, and he tries to anize a group to defend the pla. The story works its way to a reasonable and rather bitter and unchangeable conclusion. In The Last Castle a group of decadent (頹廢的 ) humans have returned to the longabandoned Earth and set up a weak society in several castles. All of the work is performed by various alien races. For example, the Meks, a hivelike (像蜂群的 ) species, always keep a special technology. The Meks finally revolt (反抗 ). Using their control of the technology, they destroy all of the castles except the strongest one, Castle Hagedorn. Then the story turns to the ineffective attempts of the humans to fight against the aliens. Most of them care too much about their “honor” and do noth ing, and others refuse to kill the aliens. The prose (散文體 ) and characterization here are more effective than in The Dragon Masters, but the plot is less convincing (令人信服的 ). 32.
