My f ri end, Cr awley, has always been a f anatical opponent of Mr Lane39。 I lit a cigar et te to calm my nerves. I smoked with concent ration and pl easur e as I was ure that hi s would be my last cigar et te. For a whole week I did not smoke at al and dur ing this ti me, my wi fe suf fered teri bl y. I had al the usual symptoms of som eone giving up smoking: a bad t emper and an enor mous appet ite. My fr iends kept on off er ing me ci garet es and cigars. They made no ef or t to hide thei r amusement whenever I produced a packet of sweet s f rom my pocket. After seven days of t hi s I went t o a part y. Ever ybody around me was smoki ng and I felt extr emely unfor tabl e. When my old f ri end Bri an urged me to acept a ci garet e, it was more t han I could bear. I took one gui lti ly, l it it and smoked with sat isfact ion. My wi fe was delighted that things had returned to nor mal once more. Lesson79 By air 乘飛機(jī) I used to tr avel by air a gr eat deal when I was a boy. My parent s, used to l ive i n South Ameri ca and I used to f ly t here f rom Europe i n the holi days. An ai rhostess would take char ge of me and I never had an unpl easant experience. I am used to t ravel ing by air and only on one occasion have I ever f el t f ri ghtened. After taki ng of f, we wer e f lying low over the city and slowly gaining height, when the plane suddenly t ur ned r ound and fl ew back t o the ai rpor t. Whil e we were wait ing to land, an ai rhost ess told us to keep calm and to get off t he plane quietly as soon as i t had touched down. Everybody on boar d was worr ied and we were cur ious t o find out what had happened. Lat er we learnt t hat ther e was a ver y important person on board. The pol ice had been told that a bomb had been pl anted on the pl ane. Af ter we had landed, the pl ane was ear ched t hor oughl y. For tunately, nothing was found and f ive hours later we wer e able to t ake off again. Leson80 The Crystal Palace 水晶宮 Perhaps the most extr aordinary bui lding of t he nieenth centur y was the Cryst al Pal ace, which was built in Hyde Park f or t he Gr eat Exhibiti on of 1851. The Cryst al Pal ace was dif ferent fr om al ot her buil di ngs in t he worl d, f or it was made of i ron and glas. I t was one of the bi ggest buil di ngs of al ti me and a l ot of people f rom many countr ies came to se it . A gr eat many goods wer e sent to t he exhi bi tion f rom var ious parts of the wor ld. Macar oni has been gr own in this area for over si
