India is another country where English is in trouble. Though the nation has — more than two centuries after Samuel Johnson wrote his English dictionary — bee the hottest destination for dictionarymakers, people who use English seem to think too little of correctness. Today, many university students find it hard to write even a few correct sentences in it. What’s worse, even some teachers speak and write poor and ungrammatical English. While the French have tried to preserve the purity of their language, the English have allowed other influences to affect theirs. If every state or continent were to have its own version of English, a time might e when one group of Englishspeaking people may not be able to understand another. This is happening. Listen to the way Singaporeans speak English. Accents in the north of Britain can be hard for people in the south to understand, not to mention those outside the island. It may be a good thing that English is being a global language. The question is whether any language should be allowed such flexibility that people begin to take liberties with it. Eventually, there may be no such t
