grets. He is sorry that he doesn?t stand with them to accept punishment. He wants to be there with them one time at least in his deep heart. Although he is still lack of courage, he has realized his responsibility at least. Arthur Dimmesdale confesses his sins at last and dies in the arms of Hester. He gets free from his heart truly. He has no need to bear the torture of the doctor and his own soul. He finds the best way to pour his sadness out. Partly supported by Hester Prynne, and holding one hand of little pearl?s, the reverend Mr. Dimmesdale turned to the dignified and venerable rulers。 this is the real man she loves. Above all, Hester Prynne is great in her spirit and her actions. She knows how to five others and how to live a happy life. She is a beautiful lover, a kind woman and a responsible mother. All she does is worth at last. The Inners Sense of Rooger Chillingworth Rooger Chillingworth is a sad man in this story. He marries Hester Prynne, but there isn?t love between them. He is well learned and intelligent, but he is also conservative. He should have known their love is not true love. He wants to keep his fame which is quite important to a man especially a learned man at that society. He couldn?t bear one?s revolt. Even though in modern society people can?t accept wife?s revolt, but they can choose to divorce, and at that time, they have no this concept but to bear the unhappy marriage. So he is engaged when he sees her wife mits adultery. He makes his decision to revenge on them, we can understand his anger but we can?t accept his dehumanized actions. Rooger Chillingworth is innocent at first because he doesn?t know his wife?s revolt, but his following action is really unreasonable. He finds out the man who has secreted love with his wife and he doesn?t say everything out at first, but begin his revenge. This is really quite unacceptable. He has much knowledge and can see through somebody quickly, he doesn?t take advantage of in some beneficial aspects but to torture others from the beginning to the end. There is bad sad in his spirit and this side controls his actions. He makes Arthur Dimmesdale confess his sins and die at last. To Arthur Dimmesdale, he frees him from the society and he dies in Hester Prynne?s arms. He has no need to do actions according to Rooger Chillingworth?s guild or principle. But to Rooger Chillingworth, he is a failure not in love but in the quality. He gets nothing even though he make them confess their adultery, but after his contemporary success, his spirit is empty and all what he tries to do has no importance. He is the man who is worth sympathy. At the last chapter, Rooger Chillingworth dies because his spirit is destroyed with the die of Arthur Chillingworth gives all his wealth to Pearl. He wants Pearl has a happy life. From this aspect he is also a great man and worth respect because he accept this girl from his deep heart. He dies with satisfaction because he makes Arthur Dimmesdale confess his sin. 濟(jì)寧學(xué)院畢業(yè)論文 第 12 頁(yè) 共 21 頁(yè) Above all, all the characters in this story are ambiguity. Every man has his own sins which couldn?t avoid punishment, but at the same time, the author also pays sympathy to them. They are hated just from one side, but they are worth sympathy from the other side. Only Pearl, the little girl of this story is innocent. She knows nothing about her father and her mother?s sins when she is a little girl, because her mother always protects her. Even though she has no imitated friends, she has her mother, the best friend and has everything because of her mother, even though she never gets the love from her father. What her mother gives her are double of what a father could give. At last, she knows her father the man her mother loves the whole life and knows he is a good man. Rooger Chillingworth gives the wealth to her and she marries to a noble man. This is a happy ending, because nobody willing to hurt an innocent girl especially a growing girl with a kind heart like her mother. 濟(jì)寧學(xué)院畢業(yè)論文 第 13 頁(yè) 共 21 頁(yè) Chapter Three: Analyze This Work from the Point of Critical Realism. Realism came in the latter half of the nieenth century as a reaction against “the lie” of romanticism and sentimentalism. It expresses the concern for the world of experience, of the monplace and for the familiar and the low, even though the most representative writers of realism were William Dean Howells and Henry James, but we also could find the shadow of realism in Hawthorne?s scarlet letter. He lived in a transcendental period and his writing style is also influenced by the romanticism and realism. So we could also to see this work from the point view of realism, but what impressed us is the critical spirit. Women?s Lower Place at That Time Women?s place is often mentioned even in the modern society. The development of women?s rights is intimately related to feminism which we have discussed from the first part. God says every man equals when they are born. Maybe it is right as for the beginning of the world, but with the development of society, we can see the place of women is decline. They are more and more looked down upon by men and more controlled by them. They couldn?t go out for work, too many times outside is regarded as immoral and lack of learned. They must hide back the man and they have no choice to say “no” or “dislike” in their marriage. They must obey their parents. Hester Prynne is such a woman. She marries to a man not out love but need. At that time, love was not accepted by people. When Hester Prynne is putting on the streets, women are just gossiping on
