His levitating tubes and lightflooded interiors may feel transcendent, but they maintain a wellgrounded sense of architectural space39。AN ET DU SURFBiarritz, France, 20052010PROGRAM: museum, plaza and exhibition areasCLIENT: City of Biarritz / Adim Sud OuestSIZE: 3800 smSTATUS: construction phaseThis new museum project intends to raise awareness of oceanic issues and to explore educational and scientific aspects of the surf and sea and their role upon our leisure, science, and ecology. The project is prised of a museum building, exhibition areas, and a plaza, within a larger master plan. The design concept is based on the phrases under the sky / under the sea. The building shape is intended to create a central gathering plaza, open to sky and sea, with the horizon in the distance. This Place de l39。s best known for inventive cultural buildings, such as the Cite de l39。s still capable of simple, poetic gestures.DeparturesEL CROQUIS: STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS 20042008, 2008El Croquis Editorial 141 Steven Holl Architects 2004 2008: includes the latest realized projects by Steven Holl Architects, such as The New Residence at the Swiss Embassy, The NYU Department of Philosophy. This 1960s building was designed in the form of a shirt collar and is across the street from the site. It was the interaction between the factory owner and Arte Povera artists such as Piero Manzoni that enabled such a special collection of art to exist in Herning. A fabric theme is carried throughout the project from the shape of the building which resembles a collection of shirtsleeves viewed from above, through the wall finishes. Fabric tarps were inserted into the formwork to yield a fabric texture to the buildings exterior walls of white concrete. Steven Holl39。y and the farm where the writer grew up. The museum includes exhibition areas, a library and reading room, a cafe and an auditorium. The concept for the museum is building as a body, creating a battleground of invisible forces. The stained black wood exterior skin is characteristic of the great wooden stave Norse churches. The spine of the building body is the central elevator, providing handicapped and freight access to all parts of the building. At the roof garden the long grass reflects the traditional Norwegian sod roofs in a different way. Strange, surprising and phenomenal experiences in space perspective and light will provide an inspiring frame for the exhibitions. He has designed shapeshifting spaces that flow, like an unfolding narrative, down ramps and graceful steps, with a canted wall here, a curve in the high ceiling there, as a visitor moves through the galleries for contemporary art, African art and photography. Light spills in at unexpected moments, from above or from big panes of glass overlooking the garden.39。Nighttime is the best time to see the new addition to the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art。s the Most Anticipated Building of 2007.39。Jason Edward Kaufman, The Art Newspaper39。.
