【正文】 (注意：may not = mayn’t might not = mightn’t ) (注意：may not 也可表示一般的不許可，即表示根據(jù)一般規(guī)定的不許可，而不是說話人不許可。 * Food poisoning can cause death. 食物中毒可導(dǎo)致死亡。* What can [could] they be doing? 他們會(huì)在干什么呢?* We could go there this summer. 今年夏天我們可能要去那兒。 例如： * Can [Could] this be true? 這可能是真的嗎? * Today is Sunday, he can’t be at school. 今天是星期天，他不可能在學(xué)校里。can常用于否定句，疑問句中，用于肯定句時(shí)表示理論上的可能性(即從理論或邏輯上分析是可能的，但實(shí)際未必會(huì)發(fā)生)。例如： * Can you e to the party tomorrow? 你明天能來參加我們的聚會(huì)嗎？* We can discuss that later.* I’m too busy today, but I can e to your place tomorrow.* He will be free tomorrow afternoon, so he can go to the lecture.* Can you e to a party on Saturday night? ○ 表示過去的能力可用was/were able to，也可用could ，在肯定句中，could 僅是用于表示泛指過去的一般能力，如果要指過去做某樁具體事情的能力通常不用could要用was/were able to（以及managed to），當(dāng)然在否定句中，can 和be able to 無此限制：could 既可表示過去的一般能力，也可表示過去做某樁具體事情的能力。can 表示現(xiàn)在的能力時(shí)，既可表示做某樁具體事情的“能力”，也可泛指一般的能力（《新編英語語法教程》，可用于肯定句，否定句，疑問句等句中。例如： * He can speak English. (一般的能力) * I can climb this cliff（峭壁） .(具體的事情) * Is there anything I can do for you? (具體的事情) * She can’t play the piano. (一般的能力) * He can drive a car. (一般的能力) * He is only four,but he can read. (一般的能力) （注） ○ can 表示現(xiàn)在的“能力”時(shí)，也可以用be able to ,即把be able to 用為一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)，二者可通用，但can 用得較多。例如：*I could walk when I was eight months old. * I was able to walk 50 meters in a minute when I was eight months old. * He was able to swim halfway before he collapsed(動(dòng)詞：衰退) . * He was able to translate the article without a dictionary. * I couldn’t /wasn’t able to play the piano when I was at school. * She could play the piano when she was only six. * At that time I could still read without spectacles. * He got so drunk that he couldn’t /wasn’t able to find the front door . ○ 另外，can 可用于人或其它事物作主語的句子中，be able to 只用于人和動(dòng)物作主語的句子中。但could 則無此限制(即可用于肯定句，否定句和疑問句)。 * He can’t be a millionaire. 他不可能是個(gè)百萬富翁。(將來可能性)* You could be right, but I don’t think you are. 你可能是對(duì)的，但我并不認(rèn)為你是對(duì)的。二、may / might 的用法 ① 表示“許可”，意思是“可以”。例如：* Borrowers may not take out of the library more than two books at a time .) ② 表示推測(cè) ，意思是“可能，或許”。 例如：
