Therefore, in the mobile munications system, it’s a good choice to use variablerate modulation technology in accordance with changes in mobile channel, in order to effectively increase the fading channel adaptability. Variablerate modulation technique is a bination of the basic modulation methods of transmission control, In essence, is a kind of adaptive modulation technology, it can adaptively change its transfer rate with random changes in the mobile channel, that is, when the channel conditions are good increase in transfer rate, when the channel conditions are poor lower transmission rate. It can conduct satisfactory results both in error spectrum efficiency and system performance. In this paper, the basic principles of variablerate modulation technology were stated and a brief introduction was made on the main methods(multicarrier code division multiple access, variable gain code division multiple access, variablerate quadrature amplitude modulation) .
