Main characteristics of the New National CurriculumThe overall structure of the new English curriculum is the most prehensive ever designed. It is based on the principles of quality education and focuses on developing students’ creativity and practical language abilities. Fundamental changes have been made in terms of the views of English teaching and learning with regards to the objectives, content, methods, and assessment. The following points summarize the main characteristics of the new curriculum.1. A new design of continuity, flexibility and selectivity The design of the new English curriculum unifies both primary and secondary school English into one continuum of development and divides English language teaching and learning into nine petencebased levels with a required ponent for every student from Level 1 in primary 3 to Level 7 in senior secondary school. Detailed performance objectives for each level are given in addition to the overall aims of the course. The course adds an elective ponent with two optional tracks after the pletion of the nineyear pulsory education with an intention to provide opportunities for different routes of development and individuality. The unity and continuity between primary and secondary English language teaching is to ensure effective learning and better utilization of teaching and learning resources. It also allows flexibility and practicality in the curriculum as local educational authorities retain control of decisionmaking regarding when to start the English course in primary schools and what level should be reached, and on time allocations (4 periods a week is remended). By changing the design from a gradebased to a petencebased one gives the flexibility to both schools and students starting at different ages to follow the levels progressively. The flexibility is also exemplified in its design through an inclusion of both a required and an elective ponent after the period of pulsory education. Level 7 is required for all senior secondary students, which is designed as the mon core foundation for lifelong learning. After students reach Level 7 with certain required credits, the converse bees pletely elective.2.
