Brown once said that Language, as the tool of munication of a distinctive cultural group, is the most visible and effective expression of that cultural pattern, customs and way of life. However, in traditional English study, much attention is only paid to knowledge, such as vocabularies, phrases, grammatical rules, while the cultural background of the language is ignored. As a result, people sometimes can?t understand or municate well with each other when using some words that contain unique cultural images. With the appearance of economic globalization, the “global village” and the close contact between countries, intercultural munication has bee an integrated part of people?s life. We not only need to improve the language skills, but also to cultivate our ability of the crosscultural munication. Cultureloaded words and expressions are full of specific and unique cultural information, reflecting cultural discrepancies between different cultural groups at utmost. Under many circumstances, the same word can contain totally different associative meanings for people in different countries, such as pumpkins, they can make Americans think about Thanksgiving Day or Halloween. However, Chinese people don?t have such thoughts. And this case is especially mon with plant words, the connotative meanings of which are often ignored by English learners. The purpose of learning language is to improve the people?s ability to better municate with people around the world. Thus, to learn a language is to learn another culture. However, for different reasons in practice, little attention has been paid to the cultural meanings of the words. This paper is mainly aimed at preliminarily avoiding mistranslations and misunderstandings in crosscultural munication by conducting a general analysis and parison of cultureloaded iv words, especially plant words between Chinese and English.
