M: I39。m really sorry, but I won39。t be able to make it. W: I39。m sorry, too. But that39。s OK. Text 9 W: Nice to see you here! When did you arrive in this country? M: Actually I39。m traveling with a group. We have a very tight timetable, but as I happen to be here, I thought I might take a couple of hours off to see an old friend. W: I am glad you did. I must apologize for sounding so rude just now for I was pletely taken by surprise. You should have warned me that you were ing. Well, the most important thing is that you are here. What have you been doing so far? M: As I just mentioned, I39。m with a tourist group of old classmates, one of whom happens to be working for the tourist pany. As most of us have already been to the southeastern Asian countries and some have never been to Europe, our tourist friend arranged this trip for us at a special reduced rate. W: How lucky for you! Is it your first trip here? How have you found it? M: Actually I39。ve been here before, some years ago on a business trip, working for a government anization, so I39。ve already done most of my sight- seeing in London and that39。s why I have some free time to myself this time. W: Good. Now, tell me, what do you most like to see or do? M: Well, I don39。t know really, I39。ve already seen the most famous historical sites and scenic spots, and most impressive as they are, they don39。t tell me much about the real ordinary English people and the country. W: I see what you mean. I39。ll drive you to the countryside to eat at a local pub tomorrow and perhaps you39。ll see something of the old England, though I must admit there is not much old England left by now. Many old village shops are closed and the village schools too. But you39。ll find the people in the countryside more friendly and relaxed. Text 10 I have been weak in hearing all my life. By the time I was five years old, putting on hearing aids in the morning was just as normal as brushing my teeth. However, I never believe that it should limit my success in any way. I have been looked down upon during my 17 years. My head teacher told my parents I belonged to a school for the deaf. My classmates told me something was wrong with my brain. People speak louder than usual when they see my hearing aids in my ears. However, my hearing disability has made me a stronger person. I have to work harder and earn top grades in school to earn the respect of my teachers. In sports, I have had to run faster, hit harder, catch better and score more points to prove I39。m not physically limited. I consider myself not different from anyone else. In my struggle to prove I39。m equal to my non- disabled classmates, I have made myself better than the average teenager. I truly believe I would not be the strong person I am today if I did not have a hearing disability. A From the first use of the rocket to carry satellites into space to the setting up of space stations, human beings have been putting great effort into space research. And so far, we have achieved many successes. But there are still numerous tasks in front of us and we should not cease trying to progress. The international space station is an important step we should take in space exploration. It is not only helpful but also essential. It provides a proper space environment for many experiments that we have wanted to do for a long time. It is also a base for observations of the earth and the universe. It could also be an important base for later travel to the moon and Mars. In a word, if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station. As the space station costs a lot of money, it is hard for one country alone to establish one. The US seems to be the only country that has the ability to build a space station alone, and it has tried to do so, but not very successful. So it aggregated many other countries to work on it together. Though it is still extremely expensive, it is much cheaper than doing it alone. It is really a job that needs everyone39。s effort and will benefit everyone. But even so, the funds needed are still a big problem. As for the US, it seems that it has too many things to spend its money on. Although it is the richest country in the world it has much debt every year. It has to make arrangements about its finance, and try to find a balance in all these issues. 21 . What is the author39。s attitude towards building and developing the international space station? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Dissatisfied. 答案與解析: A 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第一段最后一句 “. ..we should not cease trying to progress.” 和作者行文的語氣可知,作者對建設(shè)國際空間站持支持態(tài)度。 22. From Paragraph 2 we can conclude that ________. A. the necessity of building the international space station is not realized now B. many experiments have been done in the international space station C. the international space station is necessary for people to explore space more D. people have traveled to Mars from the international space station 答案與解析: C 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第二段最后一句 “In a word , if we want to explore space more, the first thing we should do is to set up a space station” 可知國際空間站是進行太空探索所必需的。 23. Which of the following is not a reason for countries39。 cooperation in building the international space station? A. That it requires a lot of money. B. That it needs everyone39。s effort. C. That it will benefit every participation country. D. That it is too far away from the earth. 答案與解析: D 細節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段第一句 “As the space station costs a lot of money ...” 和最后一句 “It is really a job that needs everyone39。s effort and will benefit everyone” 可知, A、 B、 C三項均提到了,而并沒有提到 D項。 24. The underlined word “aggregated” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________. A. united B. scol
