【正文】 ent was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him。 he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please, I insis t.” Jimmy agreed. Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy’ s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the pany. “ Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat do wn and they shared a cup of welldeserved coffee as he landed himself a new job. 24. Why did Jimmy apply for a new job? A. Two heads are better than one C A man was plaining to his friend about his wife’ s nagging(嘮叨 ). He said, “ All my wife does is talk, talk, talk.” His friend asked, “ Well, what does she think about?” He answered, “ I don’ t know. She didn’ t say!” You would think that with two ears and one mouth, we’ d all be twice as good listeners as talkers! But not so. Research shows that we usually listen to only 20% of what others say to us. But good listening is one of the easiest and most important ways to be successful whether it’ s in our job and career, our marriage, with our children, or with our friends. It’ s interesting that even though we can’ t actually shut our ears, we somehow still manage to. We only listen to what we want to. There are three important things we need to do when we listen to others. The first is observation. Use your eyes and look at them. It’ s just mon respect. Take your eyes off the TV, newspapers, or whatever else, and give the talkers your attention. The second part of listening is concentration (專心 ). When others are talking to us, we shouldn’ t break in or just be thinking about what we want to say. Hear them out. Listen to everything they have to say and then say what we want to say. The third and probably most important part of good listening is consideration. This means using your heart. Really care about what they are feeling or going through. Don’ t just hear their words, but try to understand their feelings. People usually know if we’ re really interested in or care about what they’ re saying. 28. According to the author, most people ______ . A. are not good listeners B. don’ t like those people who talk a lot C. are good at talking rather than listening D. are not successful because they don’ t know how to listen 29.
