【正文】 er language, but it is a process of information substitution. The task of a translator is to translate the information he receives into symbols which he will send out. [10]Catford explained that in trnslation there is no meaning equivalence, but just the signifier equivalence. Because of the differences between the original language and the target language, there exists the trnslation equivalence limitedness. This limitedness is not only manifested in the meaning of words, grammatical features, but also manifested in cultural differences. [11]Nida and Reyburn rightly points out: “In fact, difficulties arising out of differences of culture constitute the most serious problems for translators and have produces the most farreaching misunderstandings among readers.” [12] These difficulties exist largely because of the fact that all translators work in some specific sociocultural contexts. To minimize the chance of misreading the original from the point of view of their own cultures, translators need to be aware of and constantly alert of, among other things, the Vorstruktur ( “prestructure” ) imposed upon their consciousness by their own cultural background. 武漢科技大學本科畢業(yè)論文 12 Considering the Different Cultural Differences Because of different living conditions, different customs, different religions believes, different history allusions and so on, the understanding and feelings to color terms and the associational meaning and pragmatic meaning are different . Therefore, in translating these words about color, cultural factors are to be taken into consideration. The pragmatic meaning of color words may be similar, different or be made cultural zero in the different languages. So it is necessary to get the identity from the difference when we translate the color words , it is of practical significance to know the differences between English and Chinese color words and their extended meaning for developing translating practice. When the famous translator David Hawkes was translating 《 紅樓夢 》 ,he found that the red in the book symbolized happiness, pleasure, blessedness and blessing ,which in english countries, people took green and golden to symbolize. As a result,he translated with some changes: 賈寶玉神游太虛境,警幻仙曲演紅樓夢。 We can39。 He is too yellow to stand up and fight. 他太膽怯,不敢奮起戰(zhàn)斗。 English has the term greeneyed or green with envy, both meaned jealous and ,in chinese, the expression used to describe the same feeling is “眼紅 ” and”紅眼病 ”, which totally different from the the way,the chinese expression “戴綠帽子 ”means to be a cuckold,so if we translate it word by word, english people cannot understand it. Influence of Differenct Customs Talking about red and white, there is an interesting coincidence in Chinese and English, and that dissimilarrity couses by the influence of their different customs. In Chinese, those who are popular and find favor with their bosses are called 紅人( red guy literally) .But Irish people call them the whiteheaded boy. In this sense, red equals white in the two cultures. In English, white is usually related to spotlessness and purity. For example, “white war” means economic petition. Some objects get their names from their colors. For instance “white goods” are the huge and expensive domestic electric equipments (painted in white). And we also have “white money” refers to the silver coin, “white coal” is the hydraulic power, “white elephant”(昂貴卻派不上用場的物體或物主不需要但又無法處置之物) , “white sale”(大減價) , “the white way”(白光大街 ,指城里燈 光燦爛的商業(yè)區(qū)) . The connotation of white in Chinese also includes something unhappy. At funerals, Chinese pay respect to the dead and express their sorrow by wearing white and writing elegiac couplets in white paper. In the West ,however ,white is the traditional color for the brides at weddings, and to wear white at funerals would be offensive. So care should be taken in translating the phrase 紅白喜事 . To avoid 武漢科技大學本科畢業(yè)論文 9 misunderstanding, we can put it simply as weddings and funerals. Influence of Different Religious Beliefs Religious culture is an important ponent in the lives of many human the system of enfeoffment, Christianity, Catholicism and Roman Catholicism played a very important role and exert great influence on the western world. The western people including the British are still believed that the God, Heaven and Hell really exist. [8] White and black are the symbols of darkness and lightness respectively since human existence. In Bible darkness stands for evil and demon, luminosity for God, Christ, truth and virtue. In western culture white usually stands for the good and right, black for the bad and wrong. And this is also true in famous ballet opera Swan Lake, black swans for evil and hate while white ones for purity and love. We Chinese uses the idioms “清白無辜 ” for an innocent person and “潔白無暇 ” for purity as well. White doves are always regarded as the symbol of peace. In western countries the bride wears white robe in the hope of obtaining luckiness and happiness in the future. One of the “white days” of someone’s life stands for a good day. Whereas black is the color for seriousness and gravity, and for funeral as well. In the US and the UK, people wear black suit when attending funerals, signifying gravity and mourning for the dead. Idioms like black market, blackhearted, blacklist, Backhands, etc, shows that black is always connected with the bad and evil side of human characters Influence of Different History Allusions Historical culture refers to the culture that is formed by the developing process Of certain history and social heritage which varies between nations at often times. The yellow is the representative color of Chinese nation from ancient times, and also one of the colors, which Chinese nationality advocates. In ancient times, the yellow sy
