Postmenopausal women over the age of 65 using bined hormone therapy face significantly increased risks of dementia and strokes, according to new findings from a substudy of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). The research, part of the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) and reported in the May 28 issue of Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), found that older women taking Prempro, the most monly used form of estrogen plus progestin, were twice as likely to develop dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, than their placebotaking counterparts. Menopausal hormone therapy with estrogen plus progestin doubles a woman39。s risk of death from breast cancer, nearly doubles the risk of death from nonsmall cell lung cancer, and increases the risk of death from colorectal cancer by 54%, according to an updated analysis of the Women39。s Health Initiative randomized trials. ? As we reexamine the facts, we find that the WHI study didn’t say that using hormones to treat menopausal symptoms and reduce the risk of disease was a bad idea. It did tell us that using Premarin and Provera (a synthetic analogue of progesterone) was not a successful way to do it. ? It makes sense. Menopausal symptoms aren’t caused by a lack of horse estrogens or synthetic progesterones.
