In reality, the body language is often used by people in their daily life. We often use some simplest gestures to express ourselves instead of using words. For example, waving hands with open palm often stand for goodbye. The body language is incidental, instinctive and helpful. In the plex social life, language is often disguised. Body language is a way to reflect people‘s changes of their inner feelings and emotions. In different culture backgrounds, body language is often endowed with different meanings. For instance, Chinese people make a praise with a thumbsup, contempt with the little finger. But Japanese use a thumbsup to mean ―father‖ and the little finger ―lover‖ and at the same time a thumbsup in the UK is a way to ask for a ride. Americans pay great attentions to the time and the way the eye contact was given and in which situation. In normal conversation, people would spend about one minute looking at each other before they look away. It is indicated that two Americans are intimate if they gazed at each other. In northern America, children get used to look at their municators directly. If they don‘t, they are lacking thought of confidence. They believe the saying ―Never trust a person who can‘t look at you in the eyes.‖ For showing politeness or respect, Chinese people will often frequently avoid direct eye contact with people they have not met. Facial expression In daily munication and daily behaviors, some differences caused by Chinese‘s humility and Americans‘ selfesteem are worth mentioning. When receiving honest praise from other people, Chinese people usually will give an expression with their body meaning ―I don‘t believe‖, ―no‖, ―I don‘t deserve such praise‖, and even may give an anxious look. Americans think that such a response may be dishonest and or hypocritical as such. On the contrary, they may smile to the person who praise them, accept the pliment and usually say ―thank you‖. In the Chinese point of view, such response is kind of pride and conceited. When expressing some positive emotions, such as pliment and sympathy, Chinese people sometimes have less sense of propriety in their Thesis, 20xx, Tianjin University of Technology amp。 elder sits and jounior stands and so on. So the younger use the way of giving the old a seat to show respect. But in America, people tend to shorter the distance to show the equality. When the people who have high stature want to create a harmonious and equal balanced atmosphere by shortening the distance when they are conversing with you, they will choose to sit. So when adults talk to children they will usually bend down. No one can really keep silent, if he does not talk, their body language will usuall give them away. In fact, this statement means that people‘s postures, attitude and other body language can deliver more hidden information. People from America prefer kneeling or sitting on the ground to bending down. For example, when they are around the fire, they are willing to kneel or sit on the ground. But people from the countryside of Northern China get used to the posture of kneeling or sitting on the ground. Americans are well known for their causality. Teachers can sit wherever they like when they are teaching, such as on the platform or desk. And the students needn‘t sit straight. But in China, teachers make a good example to their students at first, they are all required to have a good manner. Besides, the interaction between people is also informal, even when the two sides are quite different in age or status. In addition, equality and individualism have long been part of American dream and Americans highlight the value of individualism and personal efforts very much. When the children are young, parents encourage their kids to be independent, sleeping alone in their own bedroom at night, making their own decisions about their life and what to do and so on. When the children are 18 years old, they will leave home and support themselves. The core factors of Chinese culture China is an old and big country with a long history of about 5,000 years. China is known as ―a state of ceremonies‖. No matter what people do, they always follow the conventional protocols and etiquettes. Therefore, pared with the casualness in American culture, Chinese people value more formality. In a Chinese family, people have clear distinctions between sisters and brothers, uncles and aunts, between the members from father39。 Education 18 Notes: 1Hu Wenzhong, Aspects of Intercultural Communication (Beijing: Foreign Language Teaching and Researching Press, 1999)132 2Bi jiwan, Intercultural nonverbal munication(Beijing: Foreign Language Teaching and Researching Press, 20xx)143 Thesis, 20xx, Tianjin University of Technology amp。 Education 6 nonverbal munication.
