It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.” “She never said anything about that to me.” said Papa. “Of course she didn’t,” said Mama. “She was afraid you ’d blow your top. You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt?” “Oh, my gosh!” Papa said, “I’ve been so stupid! I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.” “It’s like anything else, dear,” said Mama , “No matter how good at it you are, if it stops being fun, you won’t want to do it anymore.” “She must be really mad at me,” he mumbled (嘟噥 ). “Maybe I should say sorry to her.” Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents. “Honey,” said Mama with a smile, “your papa and I have decided tha t there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.” Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. S he ran to Papa and jumped into his arms, giving him a big hug. “I’m going to play cards with Lizzy!” she said. “See you later!” From the kitchen window, Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house. “It’s good to see her happy again,” said Mama. “Well, it’ s not too late, anyway.” Papa said. 51. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that overconsumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2020. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard. Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of areas for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are ing round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary. There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb. 55. C My father was 44 and knew he wasn’t going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life. Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a timekiller. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.” Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me pe rmission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that wo
