Fairies use it to wreck romantic havoc. Because of the love potion, the situation of the young Athenian lovers bees increasingly confused. Lasander loves Helena instead of Hermia. Seventhly, the fairies do not have love experience. They do not know how to deal with love affairs. It is believed that Puck should be the chief criminal. There was a popular tradition regarding fairies in England in Shakespeare’s time. Fairies were usually imagined as malicious creatures, and were associated with devils and witches. The word Puck was name used to describe demons or devils. Puck mistakenly lets the love potion on Lysander’s eyelids instead of Demetrius’s, making Lysander fall in love with Helena instead of Hermia. Eighthly, sexual desire is another reason of the difficulty. Lysander wants to sleep with Hermia together. But Hermia refuses to do it. The reason why Lysander wants to do it is the sexual desire toward Hermia. Lysander says: “One turf shall serve as pillow for us both。 only give me leave,Unworthy as I am, to follow you. What worser place can I beg in your love,And yet a place of high respect with me,Than to be used as you use your dog? (A MidSummer Night’s Dream 42)How pitiful she is! Dog is a kind of pet and she wants him to treat her like a dog. She wants him to spurn her and strike her just for the purpose to follow him. She pares herself with a dog. How dog can pare with a woman? It is heartbreaking.Fifthly, both Lysander and Demetrius love her. In the world of fairy wood, she bees more pitiful. When finding out the difficulty of her, Oberon sympathizes with her. So he asks Pucks to find the love potion. When the audience watches here, they may relax a little, expecting that the love potion can solve her problems. But it is just audience’s expect. They ignore the fact that Puck is very mischievous and he likes joking. Thus, it brings the next plot. It is true that Demetrius is in love with her. However, Lysander loves her, too. Do not you think it is very ridiculous? Lysander should love Hermia. He can not love Helena. Puck should be blamed because it is he that mistakenly makes Lysander love Helena. Helena is very sure that the two men are mocking her when they two men express the love toward her. She says: O spite! O hell! I see you are bent To set against me for your merriment: You would not do me thus much injury. Can you not hate me, as I know you do, But you must join in souls to mock me too? (A MidSummer Night’s Dream 82)She is very confused and does believe neither Lysander nor Demetrius loves her. She cannot figure out why the two men have such exchange in a short time. Sixthly, she is challenged by Hermia into a fight. Hermia pulls all the responsibility on Helena and believes that Helena steals her lover in the darkness. Hermia says: “O me! You jugger! You cankerblossom! You thief of my love! What! Have you e by night and stol39
