【正文】 contact is not allowed and once people touch each other a little unconsciously, they may say “excuse me” or “sorry” to apologize for it(Pan,2021). For they emphasize a basic principle that brooking no violation of a private space. Yet China, with large population, has a little attention to private space so that they can take lenient and understanding attitude toward it though they as well as feel unfortable sometimes. For instance, anyone needs to say sorry if you jam into the crowded bus like sardine fishes can, when you go to work every day morning. Touching with Bodies of the Same Sex In English country, males and females all have a habit of hugging and kissing each other in meeting or greeting. Chinese do the same act only with their lover or wife in privacy so that they can’t bear this touching. Furthermore, in China, those of the same sex can touch each other causally but enjoin from those of the opposite sex which is just like the saying goes, in accordance with Confucian rules of etiquette, “In giving and receiving, man and woman should not touch each other”. However, in America, physical contacts especially between young people of the same sex are under an embargo because that can result in behaviors of homosexual including handing in hand with each other, putting an arm round one’s shoulder and hugging each other, etc. yet those body touching of the opposite sex can be considered the first law of nature. Touching with Children’s Body In addition, Chinese think touch with children’s bodies of friends or neighbors is hail fellow well met and people pat children’s heads slightly or hugging them, showing friendly. Chinese like to touch his/her forehead or face lightly to show their kindness and gladness when they see a child from the west from time to time. In the contrary, it can pass for an impolite act in western, because only with an intimate relationship like members of family and close friends can do it, or parents will feel 11 unfortable for the act (Xia and Zhang, 2021). 4. Conclusion With the increasing munication between China and western countries, we should strengthen the intercultural municative petence that includes not only language municative ability but body language municative petence. In term of the above parisons and analysis of this paper, we can see that in crosscultural munication, body language is an indispensable part of human munication which even plays a more important role than language, so taboos in body language between China and west is an unavoidable issue. There is an old saying: “ask about taboos and bans upon arrival in a foreign country。 [10] 賈玉新《跨文化交際學(xué)》 [M ],上海:上海外語教育出版社 ,1997 年 :456。 [6] 戴德和戴圣,《禮記》, [M] 北京:經(jīng)典閣圖書公司, 2021 年。 nations of far northern take third, because few gestures are used to municate with each other (Xia and Zhang, 2021). Thereby, using gesture should be quite careful otherwise taboo is easily made. Waving Chinese and American all have gesture to wave people to e, but people can be misunderstood by each gesture for which suggests different connotations. When Chinese wave someone to e, they often stretch out their arm, palm down, and the hand swing up and down, back and forth while westerners think this action seem to tell them pejoratively to go away。 looking directly at Chinese, especially women, makes them feel offensive when a conversation occurs between Chinese and westerner. It follows that it influences on the conversation if just have an eye on taboos about speaking (Pan, 2021). Therefore, it is necessary to discuss taboos in body language of nonverbal munication in order to make people recognize its importance of intercultural munication. The Features of Body Language Just the same as spoken language, body language is a way to deliver that accumulating during long life in human history. With diverse cultural background, pattern of manifestation and connotation 3 of body language not only have similarity but disparity. As a result, there are two features of body language: biological and cultural features. Biological features refer to the special features which human, whatever nations, all have to express some emotions because the facial expression is innate behavior and human physiology is in mon. For example, people smile when being happy, gape eyes when being angry, and frown when feeling dissatisfied, etc. The very similarity of body language makes Chaplin beloved by Chinese through his brilliant performance in silent film. Cultural features mean some body languages get acquired and pass on from generation to generation, sharing with the members of social groups and being the part of those cultures. Owning to several cultural backgrounds between china and the west, they build up respective values and behavior patterns so that they have no alikeness expressing and understanding body language. Besides, many behaviors of body language are acquired and particularly accepted due to customs. For example, a shrug done by AngloAmericans means having no other way or being rather baffling。 i 研究方向:文化 作者姓名: 所學(xué)專業(yè):英語 論文題目: On the Taboo differences in Body Language in Chinese and Western cultures 淺析肢體語言禁忌在中西文化中的差異 論文字?jǐn)?shù): 4,200 指導(dǎo)老師: 提交日期: 2 ii A thesis submitted to the Foreign Languages Department of Northwest University for Nationalities for the degree of Bachelor of Arts Table of Contents 1 I n t r o d u c t i o n ………………………………………… ...… . . . . .1 2 The S i g n i f i c a n c e and F e a t u r e s of Body L a n g u a g e … … … . 2 2. 1 Significance of Body Language………………………………………… . . . 2 2 . 2 T he Fe at ur e s of B od y Language…………………………………………… 3 3 Tab o o s in B o d y L a n g u a g e … … … … … … … … … … … … … . . 3 3. 1 Taboos of Facial Expressions……………………………………………… . 3 3 . 1 .
