Ks5u A. show us the function of major sports Ks5u B. encourage us to have green sports Ks5u C. discuss the major influence of popular sports Ks5u D. introduce different types of environmentfriendly sports Ks5u Passage C Quite different from storm waves are the giant sea waves called tsunamis( 海嘯 ), which are from the Japanese expression for “high water in a harbor”. These waves are also referred to by the general public as tidal waves, although they have relatively little to do with tides. Scientists often refer to them as earthquake sea waves, far more appropriate in that they do result from earthquake 9 activity. Tsunamis often occur in the Pacific because the Pacific is an area of heavy earthquake activity. Two areas of the Pacific well accustomed to the threat of tsunamis are Japan and Hawaii. Because the earthquake activity that causes tsunamis in Japan often occurs on the ocean bottom quite close to the islands. The tsunamis that hit Japan often e with little warning and can therefore prove disastrous(災難性的 ). Most of the tsunamis that hit the Hawaiian Islands, however, originate(起源) thousands of miles away near the coast of Alaska, so these tsunamis have a much greater distance to travel and the people of Hawaii generally have time for warning of their arrival. Tsunamis are certainly not limited to Japan and Hawaii. In 1755, Europe experienced a disastrous tsunami, when movement near the Azores caused a massive tsunami to sweep onto the Portuguese coast and flood the heavily populated area around Lisbon. The greatest tsunami on record occurred on the other side of the world in 1883 when the Krakatoa volcano(火山) underwent a massive explosion(爆炸) , sending waves more than 30 meters high onto nearby Indonesian islands. The tsunami from this volcano actually traveled around the world and was witnessed as far as the English Channel. 69. The paragraph before this passage possibly is about __________. A. giant sea waves B. storm waves C. earthquake activities D. history of tsunami 70. Tsunamis in Hawaii are more likely to ___________. A. cause more problems B. e without warning C. happen deeper undersea D. be formed far away from the coast 71. The tsunami caused by Krakatoa volcano in 1883 must ___________. A. have brought massive waves to the English Channel B. have brought a huge disaster to the Indonesian islands C. have been felt from the rest of the world 10 D. have thrown Lisbon into a state of disorder 72. It is implied in the passage that tsunamis ___________. A. are always higher than 20 meters B. are not dangerous on the coast C. can be forecasted as soon as they take place D. do not take place like regular tides Passage D Time and time again, one may be warned, “Your name will be mud.” Many have used the expression in the mistaken belief that it has something to do with the kind of dirt found in the streets or on unclean river bottoms. But the expression es from the name of Doctor Samuel Alexander Mudd, a physician who fixed the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln. Doctor Mudd treated Booth?s injured leg without knowing who he was. A small group helped Booth to plan Lincoln?s murder(謀殺) . They were all caught and sentenced to death or prison terms(監(jiān)禁) . Doctor Mudd had nothing to do with Lincoln?s murder or with any of the men who had planned it. All seemed to show that he was an innocent(無辜 的 ) man. But he had given some kind of help only to leave Booth to escape. This in itself was a crime then. And so, Doctor Mudd was sentenced to prison for life. In prison, Doctor Mudd saved many prisoners and guards in a yellow fever outbreak. President Andrew Johnson set him free in 1869, after the doctor had spent almost four years in prison. The murder of Lincoln was certainly a heavy blow to the American people. It filled them with bitterness that lasted many years. They hated Booth very much and they also hated anybody who had helped the murder in any way. Doctor Mudd was freed, but people never fave(原諒) him and his name passed into American folk speech as something bad and hateful. The Mudd family had also suffered a lot because of the name until not long ago. 73. The best title for this passage is _________. A. Abraham Lincoln, the Great President for the American People 11 B. Your Name Will Be Mud C. Social Problems in the . during the 1860s D. Old Law System of the . 74. From the la
