he tells her he owes her his life. Odysseus then praises Demodocus’(得摩多科斯) song about the Achaeans(亞加亞) , and asks him to sing about the Wooden Horse Odysseus used to invade Troy. He does, and Odysseus weeps and only Alcinous (阿爾奇諾斯) notices. Alcinous stops music, questions why the stranger has cried despite all the gifts he has received, and asks him for his name and his full story. Odysseus reveals his true identity and tells the story of his adventures during the nine years after the fall of Troy: ? Odysseus Cries When Demodocus Sings ?隨著得摩多科斯的吟唱,奧德修斯哭了 Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea After splitting off from other troops, Odysseus and his crew sacked the city of Ismarus(伊斯馬羅斯) , a coastal town of the Ciconians. His men were busy looting, and they did not listen to his prudent order to return to the ships and leave. As a result Ciconians’(奇科涅斯) neighbor sent an army against the Ithacans(伊薩卡人) . Odysseus lost many men by the time his twelve ships sailed away, and suffered a great storm the next few days at sea. On the tenth day they reached the island of the LotusEaters(忘憂樹(shù)) , a peaceful people who ate the Lotus which would bring pleasure and make people fet who they were. Three of Odysseus’ men ate the Lotus and wished to remain there, but Odysseus(奧德修斯) forced them back on to the ship and sailed off again. Trojan War: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea Landing his ships in Sicily(西西里島) , Odysseus and twelve of his men went in search of supplies. They came to the cave of Polyphemus(波呂斐摩斯) , a oneeyed giant, son of Poseidon, when he was out tending his sheep, and there they awaited his return, hoping to meet a friendly host. When the Cyclops(庫(kù)克羅普斯) arrived, he drove his sheep into the cave and sat down to milk the ewes and goats. His work done, the Cyclops lit up the fire and discovered the strangers. He asked who they were and where they came from. Odysseus introduced them and asked for any help he could provide, warning him not to offend Zeus, the god of hospitality. Polyphemus(波呂斐摩斯) ridiculed this idea and asked where Odysseus’ ship was. Trojan War: The Odyssey The crafty leader lied and said it was wrecked and that they were the only survivors. Polyphemus(波呂斐摩斯) grabbed two of Odysseus’ men, beat them dead, and devoured them while the other men watched, powerless. Polyphemus then went to sleep and blocked the entrance with a huge rock. Knowing he would never be able to take his men out of the cave if they killed the Cyclops(庫(kù)克羅普斯) (since they were not strong enough to move the rock at the cave’s entrance), Odysseus devised a plan. He and his men sharpened a huge log of wood into a stake, during Polyphemus’ absence the next day. Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea When the evening came, Polyphemus returned, and when his daily business was over he seized two more Achaeans(亞加亞人) for supper. This time, however, Odysseus offered him a bowl of wine, which he had taken with him when he left the ship, inviting the giant to wash down his meal with it. Enjoying the wine, Polyphemus(波呂斐摩斯) asked for Odysseus’ name, and the hero replied that it was Outis (which means “Nobody” in Greek). Polyphemus promised to eat “Nobody” last. Drunk, the Cyclops went to bed. Odysseus and his men hardened the huge stake point in the fire pit and drove the stake into Polyphemus’ single eye and blinded him. His cry caused the neighboring Cyclops(庫(kù)克羅普斯) to gather outside his cave, asking him what was wrong. Polyphemus replied that “Nobody is killing me.” The other Cyclops returned to their own caves. ? Odysseus Blinding Polyphemus Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea When Polyphemus(波呂斐摩斯) had to let his herds(人群) to graze in the pasture the following day, Odysseus had tied each of his men to the bellies(腹部) of three sheep, while he himself hanged on to the belly of a huge ram. The Cyclops(庫(kù)克羅普斯) passed his hands along the back of all the animals as he let them out, and detected nothing. ? Odysseus and Polyphemus ?奧德修斯和波呂斐摩斯 Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea Safe on the sea again, Odysseus shouted insults(侮辱) to Polyphemus. Polyphemus broke off a hilltop and threw it near the ship, tossing it off balance with a giant wave. Despite the pleas of his crew not to give away their position by again taunting Polyphemus, Odysseus gave the Cyclops(卡庫(kù)洛普斯) the name and homeland of the man who had blinded him. Polyphemus said he had been once given a prophecy that someone named Odysseus, presumably(推測(cè)起來(lái)) a giant, would blind him。 he should return home secretly, without warning his wife. Odysseus talked with other shadows, including Achilles(阿基里斯) who ruled that part of the Underworld, and the hero, Ajax the Greater, who was still angry and refused to talk to him. He saw Tantalus(坦塔羅斯) , tortured by food and drink always just out of reach, and Sisyphus(科林斯王) , perpetually pushing a boulder up a hill. After the sight of so many dead became unbearable to Odysseus, he fled to his ship and he and his men sailed out of the Underworld. The Trojan War: The Odyssey ? The wandering on the Sea Returning to Circe’s(賽斯) island, Circe gave further instructions to Odysseus about the Sirens(賽壬) , and Scylla(斯庫(kù)拉) and Charybdis(卡律布狄斯) . After burying Elphenor’s body properly, Odysseus and his men set sail once more. The Trojan War Saga: The Odyssey ? The Wandering on the Sea The first encounter they came to was the island of the Sirens(賽壬) . Here beautiful nymphs(寧芙) with the body of halfbird and halfwoman attracted seamen with their dazzling songs and lured them onto the reefs surrounding their island, where th
