The experiment about students’ intercultural awareness in middle schoolIn order to prove the research that cultivating students’ intercultural awareness can improve their English, the writer had a test in senior one students of Don Shan middle school during my period of probation. The test included two classes with 98 students, all of whom were just graduated from junior middle school. Before the writer had the test, she devised a questionnaire and distributed to the students. After the test,the writer still used these questionnaires to check the effect of her teaching. Through the questionnaires the writer found some questions and got some inspirations from it. The questionnaire before the test Most students can be aware that cultural awareness is important for their English study, but few of them think cultural awareness is very important for English learning (chart 1). Students usually have such opinions that learning English is just to learning new words, new grammar rules and then getting a high score in exam. They do not have a correct motivation. In the test, nearly 70% students recognized that their motivations to learn English are that get a satisfied score in university entrance exam and gain the enrolments notification from famous university. They do not have a strong desire to municate with people of the target language (chart 2). Although majority of the students are interested in western culture, such as western literature, western music and western sport starts (chart 3). History classes pay more about western culture knowledge to students than the English class. Only % students think they would get the intercultural knowledge in their spare time.
