The stubborn Afri can In 1968 a Kenyan athlete Ki p Kei no peted in the 1500 m etres runni ng race. At that ti m e he was very il l and i n great pai n. Al though he had reached the standard for the fi nal of the race he deci ded at fi rst not to take part. However, just before the race was goi ng to start he changed his mind. He ran from hi s room and arrived at the race track a few mi nutes before the race was about to begin. But he i s al so big i n a different way — he fights hard to protect China’s past. His real name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novel s about l ife in China. Instead he goes out and does what he can him esel f. If others fol l ow him, so m uch the better. O ne of hi s bi gest projects was to protect the ol dest street i n Ti anjin. Al ong that street som e shops had done busi ness for seven hundred years. Althought the city government rebui l t thi s street, they di d save i ts ol dest buil di ng. Another project was m ore succesful : he persuaded the ci ty governm ent to buy som e l and i n the centre of the ci ty so i t coul d not be sol d for busi neses. This area i s very im protant for the hi story of Tianji n. It was here that the ci ty was fi rst bui lt duri ng the Song Dynasty. Later m any treasures were found here. To Feng, di ggi ng down in to the earth i s l i ke readi ng page after page of a book. Each dynasty found i n the earth i s li ke an i nteresting story. N ot l ong ago he and other wri ters and arti sts took photos of the ol d parts of Ti anji n. The photos were put i nto a book which was very popul ar. The m oney from the book hel ps hi s prjects. O nce, and ol d m an asked Feng to si gn a book for him, sayi ng he woul d gi ve i t to his grandson who was not yet born. I li ved i n what you cal l ― Anci ent Greece‖ and I used to wri te about the O l ym pi c Gam es a l ong ti me ago. I’ve e to your tim e to fi nd out about the presentday O l ym pi c Gam es because I know that i n 2020 they were hel d i n m y hom eland. May I ask you som e questi ons about them odern O l ym pi cs? L: Good heavens! H ave real ly e from so l ong ago? But of course you can ask any questi ons you l i ke. What woul d you li ke to know? P: H ow often do you hol d your Gam es? L: Every four years. There are two m ain sets of Gam es—the Wi nter and the Summ er Ol ympi cs, and both are hel d every four years on a regul ar basi s. The Wi nter O l ym pi cs are usual l y hel d two years before the Summ er Gam es. Onl y athl etes who have reached the agreed standard for thei r event wi l be adm i ted as peti tors. They m ay e from anywhere i n the worl d. P: Wi nter Gam es? H ow can the runers enjoy peti ng i n wi nter? And what about the horses? L: O h no! There are no running races or horse ri di ng events. Instead there are peti ti ons li ke ski ng and i ce skati ng whi ch need snow and i ce. That’s why they’re cal ed the Wi nter Ol ym pics. It’s i n the Summ er Ol ym pi cs that you have the runni ng races, together wi th swimm i ng, sail ing and al l the team sports. P: I se. Earli er you sai d that athl etes are i nvi ted from al l over the worl d. Do you m ean the Greek worl d? Our Greek ci ti es used to pete agai nst each other just for the honour of wi nni ng. N o other countri es coul d joi n i n, nor coul d sl aves or wom en! L: Nowadays any country can take part i f their athl etes are good enough. There are over 250 sports and each one has i ts own standard. Women are not onl y al l owed, but pl ay a very im portant rol e in gym nasti cs, athl eti cs, team sports and … P: Pl ease wai t a m i nute! Al those events, al those countri es and even wom en taki ng part! Where are al the athl etes housed? L: For each O lym pi cs, a speci al vi l age is bui lt for them to li ve i n, a mai n recepti on bui l di ng, several stadi um s for petiti ons, and a gym nasi um as wel l. P: That’s sounds very expansi ve. Does anyone want to host the O l ym pi c Gam es? L: As a m atter of fact, every country wants the opportuni ty.
